Need for the clean environment in hospitals is created in the control of infections. It covers the removal of bacteria from the hospital, in particular the operational room and prevents infection. The control of infections was approached by using antiseptic methods to clean wounds, instruments and surgeons' hands. And to prevent airborne infection the same solution of antiseptic is sprayed into the air. Subsequently, sterile techniques such as sterilization of instruments, wound dressings and the use of surgical gloves, gowns and masks is adopted to reduce the infections. Apart from aseptic and antiseptic techniques, there is positive ventilation by the filtered air.

The clean rooms have developed into two main types, which are specialized by their method of ventilation: laminar airflow and turbulent airflow clean rooms. The generic method of ventilation utilized in turbulent airflow clean rooms is related to that found in offices, malls, schools, manufacturing plants, auditoriums and shops, etc. The air is provided by a system of air conditioning through diffusers in ceiling. Increased air supply, room pressurization and use of high-efficiency filters are the major aspects of the clean rooms.
